Introducing Our Sixth Core Value — Empathy

We continue to chart our course through this period of transformation at De Havilland Canada. I am appreciative of the values that guide us — Grit, Respect, Accountability, Appreciation, and Courage. Today, I am excited to introduce our sixth and final core value: Empathy.

At De Havilland Canada, we believe empathy is not simply about understanding others — it’s about connecting with those around us. It’s the ability to listen with intention, to see and to respond with compassion and care.

Empathy creates a workplace where we understand and share the feelings and perspectives of employees. Listening to and acknowledging team members’ emotions, challenges, and experiences. It fosters a supportive work environment where we all feel valued and understood — increasing trust, improving communication, morale, and enhancing our teamwork, ultimately contributing to a more positive and productive workplace culture.

Here are some behaviors that demonstrate empathy:

  1. Care for and support team members, understanding that they are people first
  2. Listen without jumping to conclusions, criticizing, or imposing our own opinions
  3. Suspend judgment and remain open to others’ experiences and emotions
  4. Demonstrate compassion and sensitivity in addressing customer issues
  5. Appreciate and anticipate our team members’ needs and preferences, understanding the impact of your actions or inaction

What empathy is not:

  • Feeling sorry for others
  • Allowing others to avoid their accountabilities or not perform their work
  • Taking on others’ problems or issues, acting as a counselor or providing advice in personal areas

Thank you for embracing empathy in your daily work. Your compassion and care make a difference and help shape the culture we’re proud to be part of.
