We are updating our password requirements to help strengthen cybersecurity while making password management simpler and less disruptive.
Why This Is Changing
Longer passwords are more resilient against common password attacks and are harder for unauthorized users to guess. By increasing the minimum password length to 16 characters, we are encouraging the use of stronger passwords or passphrases that are both secure and easier to remember. This change also allows us to remove routine password expiry. Moving away from scheduled resets supports better password habits while reducing unnecessary interruptions to employees’ work.
Updated Password Requirements
The updated minimum password requirements are:
- Length: Passwords must be a minimum of 16 characters.
- Complexity: There are no specific requirements for uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, or special characters.
- Expiry: Passwords will no longer expire on a scheduled basis.
- Uniqueness: Passwords must not be reused across other accounts, systems, or services.
Multi-Factor Authentication Remains Important
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) continues to play an important role in protecting our accounts and systems. Employees should continue to approve MFA prompts only when they are actively signing in, and report any unexpected MFA prompts to the IT Service Center immediately. Where available, employees are encouraged to use passwordless sign-in options such as Windows Hello for Business or passkeys. These options can make signing in faster and more convenient by reducing the need to enter a password each time.
