Employee Spotlight: Ana Gonzalez

Ana Gonzalez
Configuration & Data Management Specialist

How did you get started in the industry?

Since I was in college, my hometown was already becoming the aviation cluster of Mexico. The aviation industry always caught my attention. After my graduation, I had the opportunity to work for GE Aviation (now GE Aerospace), first as a designer and then as a configuration and data management specialist. There I realized all the hard work behind an aircraft. The importance of the time invested in design, engineering, and safety to ensure we bring people home safely. That is how I fell in love with my job and discovered its importance.

Who or what inspires you in your work?

Women. I like to see women around me working and forging their careers, looking for their place in the industry. I see my co-workers, all committed to doing their jobs as best as possible while some are still studying, others are mothers, and some have been in the industry for a while. All of them inspire me to continue forging my own path, and never give up my dreams, inside and outside the office.

Where is your hometown, and what was it like growing up there?

My hometown is fantastic. Three hours north of Mexico City you will find Queretaro, a semi-desert colonial city with a beautiful downtown, good food, and kind people.

Growing up there was amazing, as part of a Mexican family, everything was about the food. In Mexico, every milestone of your life would be a party to celebrate with family and friends, and of course lots of food. We even celebrate death; my favourite Mexican festivity is Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead. During those days you can feel something different in the air, a mix of joy and melancholy, and the reminder that we are ephemeral. We are here just for today.

Where on earth are you hoping to travel next?

I hope to travel to Costa Rica. My older brother used to live in Canada, but a year ago he and his family moved to Central America and now every time I speak to my niece and nephew, they brag about the different fruits they are eating and the beaches they are visiting. Hopefully, next year my husband and I can go visit them so we can brag about tropical and exotic fruits.

What is your favourite pastime?

With a father who had three careers (Engineering/Sociology/Philosophy) as an example, I like to learn different things. The past two years have been all about crochet. After a couple of pillowcases and home décor, the next project will be a bed cover and a bag. This year I also started to finish my Rubrik cubes (2×2,3×3 and 4×4). My co-worker, @Ragnar Olafson is coaching me. Finally, I’m perfecting my Tres Leches cake, I don’t want to be part of the generation of Mexican aunts who no longer know how to cook!
