First Flight of a Canadian Legend: The DHC-5 Buffalo

On this day in 1964, the de Havilland Canada DHC-5 Buffalo took to the skies for the very first time.

Designed as a rugged tactical transport, the Buffalo quickly proved its exceptional short takeoff and landing (STOL) performance, capable of operating from remote and unprepared airstrips where few aircraft could go.

From supporting military operations to decades of lifesaving search and rescue missions with the RCAF, the Buffalo became a true Canadian icon of versatility and reliability.

More than 60 years later, its legacy still inspires the next generation of aircraft built on strength, adaptability, and purpose.
